Some Factors Affecting the Concentration of Silica in Cane Juice Evaporators

چکیده
Silica presents a particularly challenging problem to the Silica remains one of the most common and problematic components in cane sugar juice evaporator scale. The relationship between silica concentration in clear juice and its precipitation in the evaporator train is considered. Methods of reducing silica levels in clear juice through changes in the extraction conditions are investigated through laboratory experimentation, which shows that pH and cane preparation may be important variables. The laboratory findings have been supported by factory experience which found that reduced liming in the diffuser resulted in lower silica concentrations in the evaporator scale.

Improved sugar cane juice clarification by understanding calcium oxide-phosphate-sucrose systems.
It is accepted that the efficiency of sugar cane clarification is closely linked with sugar juice composition (including suspended or insoluble impurities), the inorganic phosphate content, the liming condition and type, and the interactions between the juice components. These interactions are not well understood, particularly those between calcium, phosphate, and sucrose in sugar cane juice. S...
متن کاملEstimation of Sucrose Inversion in Evaporators
With the use of high performance ion chromatography, investigations conducted in a number of sugar factories confirmed that glucose/brix or glucose/chloride could be used as a marker to localise and estimate sucrose inversion in evaporators, and establish its contribution to the undetermined loss. In most cases sucrose degradation took place in the later effects, where evaporator tubes were fou...
متن کاملEffect of citric acid concentration on the formation of diacetyl by certain lactic acid bactria.
Diacetyl has been associated with the "buttermilk off-flavor" sometimes found in orange juice and in frozen concentrated orange juice. Bacteria of the Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc genera have been identified as causative agents of this type of spoilage (Hays, 1951; Hays and Riester, 1952; Murdock et al., 1952, 1953; and Hill et al., 1954). Growth rates of these spoilage organisms have been inv...
متن کاملMixed Juice Clarification Revisited
The clarification of mixed juice has been the subject of research for decades, due mostly to its large impact on sugar quality. Much, if not all, of the work has however been done on mixed juice originating from milling rather than from diffusion. This paper examines a back-to-basics, laboratory approach, involving cane juices produced from conditions simulating milling and diffusion. Furthermo...
متن کاملGrowth rates of Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc species in orange juice as affected by pH and juice concentration.
Bacteria of the Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc species are frequently encountered in Concentrated orange juice. Several strains have been identified with a type of spoilage known as "buttermilk off-flavor" characterized by the presence of diacetyl in the product. The processing conditions under which this substance is formed by the bacteria are not kinown. It is assumed, however, that the bacter...
